Exhibition “History wags Its tail”

Dogs were the first animals tamed by man. Over millennia, these wild creatures became man’s indispensable companions and friends.

Dogs became a universal part of human existence. They curled up next to fire pits in hill fort settlements, lay at the feet of Lithuanian rulers, and partisans in the forests would stroke their rough fur. The purpose of the earliest dogs was clear: to hunt and defend. Humans, having tamed the wild instincts of animals, soon mastered nature as well – introducing new breeds adapted for other purposes. Although hunting and protecting long remained the main tasks for dogs, over time their role as companions became more and more prevalent. A four-legged friend curled up on the lap of a noble lady was a sign of status and luxury. For those dogs that were not lucky enough to be born noble, they could become spirit guides and forecast coming calamities. But even a simple dog born and raised in a barn has always been loved. How many complaints about the injustices of life have dogs had to listen to? How many tears have fallen on their fur? Sometimes, a four-legged friend is the only one there to listen.

One might think that, today, dogs are leading their best lives. Hunting is no longer the main source of livelihood and has become a pastime. There’s no longer a threat of fatal injuries from encountering a wild beast or fighting with each other. A sick dog is lovingly cared for by its owners and professional veterinarians. Nutrition habits have changed beyond recognition: Stone Age hunting scraps or bones from a master’s table have been replaced by quality fresh meat or wholesome dry food. The humanization of pets never ceases to amaze: from custom diets to colourful hairstyles, sports training, and strollers for dog walks. For many pets, the only task is to greet their owners when they return in the evening, or to walk with them in the park.

The job of the modern dog has also changed. In addition to the traditional duties of a yard guard, a dog can have a career in the army or the police. And it’s no longer a surprise to see a dog treating and nursing those in need, guiding a blind person, or accompanying someone who has difficulty walking. Dogs are also frequent guests on television and are the subject of feature and animated films, books, and comics. Dogs and their wagging tails have become heroes.

This faithful friendship spanning several millennia has remained true over the years and neither side has ever questioned it. We invite you to explore how the friendship between humans and dogs has only grown stronger and more beautiful over time.

The exhibition will open at the House of Histories on 30th April 2025 and run until 26th October 2025.
