The exhibition by Ieva Martinaitytė-Mediodia ‘Arising and Ceasing’

6 pm Thurs 3 April, THE ROOM gallery opens an exhibition by Ieva Martinaitytė-Mediodia ‘Arising and Ceasing’ at the ground floor of the Titanic Exhibition Halls of Vilnius Academy of Arts.

‘Arising and Ceasing’ will run through 3 May 2025

Exhibition curator Dr Jurgita Ludavičienė:
‘The artist fluctuating between New York and Vilnius has been moving closer to Lithuania in recent years: her art embraces global themes and tends to weave the micro and macro worlds into one. Tapping into the neurogenic theory, the artist caries a diversified research and visualization of the themes of ecological self. The exhibit ‘Arising and Ceasing’ is a sequel to her 2021 show ‘The Sea of Ice’ (at THE ROOM gallery) featuring her most recent work from the past three years. In them, the artist reflects on the ubiquitous phenomenon of climate change by building ever new synapses between perceptions, experience, recollections and images. The established artist now communicates not only in planes of colour: alongside with paintings, she uses installation, images, forms, signs and sounds orchestrated into one spatial unity.
This seventh solo show by Ieva Mediodia in Lithuania is a snapshot of continuous processes going on in one’s mind. These are changing memories, historical contexts, the information of global shifts transmitted via neural pathways. The works reflect cultural fossils, un-iced in the process of glacier melting, bits and pieces of recollections and associations, layered into a kind of a shimmering map of spatial constellations. Everything arises, ceases, and re-emerges, as we are particles of a process which is disrupted, undulating, yet interminable, and which provides some hope of survival.

Ieva Martinaitytė-Mediodia on her exhibition:
‘It is a non-objective abstraction, a reflection of the states of mind emerging naturally from the merging layers of colour and small relics of former meanings – the crumbling signs, letters, musical notes, etc.
With this exhibition I want to convey the state of internal voyage in the hope of recovering and perceiving beauty, which is becoming something marginal in the age of ecological crisis.’

Ieva Martinaitytė-Mediodia (b. 1968) is an artist working in New York (USA) and in Lithuania. In 1987–1993, she studied at Vilnius Academy of Arts, earning a BFA in painting. In 1998 – 2001, she earned an MFA from the Hunter College in New York. In 2003–2008, the artist collaborated with the established Annina Nosei gallery in New York. In 2014–2019, she was a co-founder and active members of New York Sla307 Artspace and its artists’ collaborative programme.
