(AV17) Gallery presents Dainius Trumpis‘ solo show “Skin and Dust”, opening on March 20th at 6 PM.
Dainius Trumpis is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of sculpture, painting, installation, and ready-made. His practice unfolds through an inquiry into liminal states of reality and fragmentary visual memories, emerging through cultural and personal narratives. His work is equally attuned to the material as well as psychological responses elicited by form. Combining industrial materials, metal, and found objects, Trumpis constructs a metaphysical vocabulary where surface and substance engage in a continuous negotiation. His sculptural reliefs and installations, marked by unexpected yet meticulously refined gestures, demand a slow, immersive engagement from the viewer.
In “Skin and Dust”, Trumpis presents a new body of work that interrogates notions of corporeality, transformation, and ephemerality through the matter itself. Through his creative process, Trumpis explores sensitive dialogue between the artist and the material. As the artist’s process is significant for its exhaustive iteration-sculptures emerge through cycles of formation and dissolution, undergoing multiple reformulations until the work asserts its own logic. These acts of making and unmaking-of sculpting and erasing-invite a confrontation with the very conditions of both sculpture and the human body.
Some of the works shown at the exhibition draw connection to fitness apparatuses, their hybrid materiality-metal, leather, paraffin-suggesting a duality of endurance and fragility, growth and entropy. Here, surfaces are charged with history: the scorched seams of cut and welded steel, the residues of oxidation function as scars-traces of an inherent instability that threatens the object’s own integrity. Moving away from ornamental concerns, Trumpis engages in an almost mechanical, at times brutal, approach to form, leading to a reciprocal transformation-one that implicates the viewer as an active participant in the work’s unfolding.
Dainius Trumpis (b. 1971) earned a Master’s degree from Šiauliai University in 2009, later completing a traineeship at the TAIK University of Art and Design in Finland. A member of the Lithuanian Artists’ Union and the Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association, Dainius Trumpis is an active participant in the contemporary art scene in Lithuania and abroad, with the exhibition at Gallery (AV17) being 30th solo exhibition. His work has been showcased internationally, with exhibitions in France, Finland, India, Morocco, and China, among other countries. The artist has received numerous rewards from prestigious art competitions, both in Lithuania and internationally.
Dainius Trumpis‘ solo show “Skin and Dust” will be on view until April 24th at the (AV17) Gallery, Totorių str. 5, Vilnius.
